  • General

Do Newman's Own products contain trans fats?
Newman's Own products all contain zero grams trans fats.

What does "USDA Certified Organic" mean?
The food has gone through a third-party certification process that validates that at least 95% of the ingredients are organic. • Salad Dressing

Why does the Olive Oil & Vinegar dressing look cloudy or lumpy in the refrigerator?
When refrigerated, olive oil tends to solidify giving the cloudy appearance to our olive oil-based dressings. Once the product gets close to room temperature the product will return to its normal appearance. There is nothing wrong with the product and most olive oil dressings act this way.

Tell me more about the salad dressing packets sold at McDonald’s.
Newman’s Own is the exclusive salad dressing served with McDonald's Premium Salads in restaurants nationwide. The salad dressings offered at McDonald's are restaurant formulations that are refrigerated to preserve their freshness.

These salad dressing packets are not sold in retail grocery stores. The McDonald’s salad dressing packets are only available at McDonald’s, although bottled versions of some of the dressings can be found in grocery stores.

Can I buy Southwest Dressing in grocery stores?
The dressing used in the Southwest Salad at McDonald’s is no longer available in retail stores.

How long will Newman's Own salad dressing last in the refrigerator once it's opened?

  • Pasta Sauce & Salsa

How long will Newman's Own pasta sauces and salsas last in the refrigerator once they are opened?
Once opened and refrigerated our pasta sauces and salsa typically last 3-7 days. They may keep longer but are susceptible to spoilage because they are all natural and do not contain preservatives. Storage times will be longer if stored at a colder temperature. Therefore, if you wish to keep them longer, turn down the temperature setting on your refrigerator or consider storing frozen in a freezer-safe container until you wish to use them.

What do I do when the vacuum safety button on the pasta sauce or salsa is popped up before I first open it?
The product should be returned to the store for a refund. If not, contact Newman's Own for a replacement coupon.

  • Refrigerated Drinks

Are Newman’s Own refrigerated drinks pasteurized?
Yes, our refrigerated drinks are pasteurized and always have been. Pasteurization is the process of heating a liquid to a high temperature for a set amount of time and then cooling it to reduce the amount of pathogenic bacteria (disease causing) and spoilage organisms present in the product. Without pasteurization, the product would spoil more quickly or possibly make the consumer sick.

  • Cookies

What does the Kosher on the front of the packaging stand for?
The certifying rabbi assigns the Kosher symbol to signify that there are dairy materials present in the production facility.

Is the palm fruit oil in your cookies hydrogenated?

  • Dried Fruit

Are Newman’s Own Dried Apricots supposed to be dark in color?
Yes! Organic Apricots will be anywhere from light peach in color to light tan to dark brown. Organic apricots will always have the dark look because there is no sulfur dioxide added to preserve their bright color after the drying process. Sulfur dioxide is strictly prohibited in organic food items and we are happy to abide by that rule. Also, we recommend storing all dried fruit items in your refrigerator. This will help to maintain optimum freshness right up to the expiration date.

Is Sulfur Dioxide added to Newman’s Own dried fruit products?
No, the use of Sulfur Dioxide in organic food items is expressly prohibited by the USDA’s National Organic Program. All of Newman’s Own Organic dried fruit products are 100% USDA Organic, with no additives or preservatives.

  • Chocolate

What does the Rainforest Alliance seal mean on your chocolate?
The Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal guarantees that the cocoa in our Signature Series was grown on farms that meet comprehensive standards for sustainable farming, protecting soil, waterways and wildlife habitat as well as the rights and welfare of workers, their families and communities.

Do you use slave labor in producing your chocolate?
We have confirmed in writing that the cocoa products we purchase have been produced on farms that treat their workers fairly, and pay them a fair wage. Our suppliers do not and will not support any farms or plantations that mistreat children and adults or engage in Slave Trade Practices.

  • Pet Food

Are your pet products thoroughly tested?
Yes. All of our pet products are manufactured to the highest standards of quality control and samples are obtained during each production run for analysis and retention for additional evaluation.

Is there any animal testing involved?
No. The only analytical testing done is in a laboratory where animals are NOT allowed. We do "taste testing" with animals awaiting adoption in a local humane society shelter.

I would like to begin feeding Newman’s Own pet food to my dog and cat. I have read that if this is done too fast that intestinal upsets may result. What are your recommendations?
Whenever there is a change of diet, it's advisable to slowly introduce the new food by mixing it into the food currently fed. We recommend mixing Newman’s Own pet foods with your current pet food over a period of approximately 2-3 weeks to guarantee that your dog or cat’s digestive system adjusts to the new food. It is important to remember that Newman’s Own pet food ingredients such as fresh natural chicken and organic brown rice, being whole foods, may be richer and may be more nutritionally concentrated than your current food. We always recommend that you contact your veterinarian if your animal has persistent digestive upsets.

What are the benefits of feeding organic dog and cat foods?
Feeding organic foods eliminates the buildup of residues of chemical additives, preservatives, pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides which have been clinically proven to have adverse health effects on dogs, cats and in fact all animals including humans.

Can I mix Newman's Own canned foods with dry foods?
Yes. Canned foods are a great way to add a little variety and "extra" taste to dry foods.

Why do the dry formulas contain soy? Soy is an excellent low-fat source of bio-available protein that contains antioxidant compounds and amino acids that boost the immune system and decrease levels of LDL cholesterol. We use organic soybean meal in all our dry food formulas. Our team of veterinarians, including a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, felt that organic soybean meal provided an excellent hypoallergenic and concentrated source of many of the essential micro and macro nutrients that animals can benefit from.

    What is carrageenan?
Carrageenan is a seaweed extract common in the Atlantic Ocean near Britain, Continental Europe and North America and used as a thickening agent in place of animal-based products like gelatin, which is extracted from animal bones. Seaweed is boiled to extract the carrageenan, and in that sense, carrageenan is completely "natural" and not much different from tomato in its creation. Note: Chemically treated, degraded carrageenan however, is a known cancer causing agent and is not used or permitted in food production.

What Is Taurine and why is it important for my cats?
Taurine is an essential amino acid for cats that is found in meat protein. It is a dietary requirement for a good eyesight, heart function, digestion (production of bile salts) and proper reproduction. Taurine is essential in cats because it is required by the heart and eyes however it is neither manufactured nor available in the body. Therefore, cats need meat to fulfill this requirement (obligate carnivores), as Taurine is only found in animal proteins such as chicken.

Why does the Advanced Formula, which is recommended for older dogs, have higher protein levels than the Adult Formula?
The advanced is higher in protein than the adult (24 vs. 21%) and is formulated for puppies, active dogs and seniors on the premise that the first two groups require higher levels of protein due to increased growth and energy needs and the later because of the decreased intestinal absorption associated with aging.
