Why does the Olive Oil & Vinegar dressing look cloudy or lumpy in the refrigerator?

Why did you change the jars from glass to plastic?
We did not take the decision to change jars lightly. One of the reasons for the change is that PET is actually recycled more than glass. According to the Environmental Protection Agency's 2014 Advancing Sustainable Materials Management data, PET is recycled at a rate of 31% versus 15% for glass. Also, a 2018 life cycle assessment study conducted by Skeo Solutions found that our PET sauce jars have a lower impact on the environment with an 18% reduction in energy use and a 47% reduction in global warming potential than glass jars. We hope this helps give you some insight into our decision.
Why hasn’t pasta sauce moved into PET before now?
Consumers love plastic containers in other categories because plastic is often lighter and less prone to breaking than other materials. Thanks to new plastic technology that can withstand high heat, pasta sauce can now be safely packaged and sold in plastic jars too.
This jar looks smaller – am I getting the same amount of sauce in each jar?
Yes, inside each jar is the same 24oz of your favorite Newman’s Own pasta sauce. These new plastic jars need less material to be sturdy, so that narrower profile is due to less packaging material, not less sauce.
Does the new jar contain BPA?
The jar is a non-BPA package made without the use of BPA. The lid is mostly made of metal, and its liner is also non-BPA made without the use of BPA.
What material is used to make the plastic jar?
Our pasta sauce jars are 100% PET. PET stands for polyethylene terephthalate and is a commonly used and widely accepted material used in food and beverage packaging.
Will the plastic jar impart off flavors and odors to the sauce inside?
No, our new plastic jars have a layer of unbreakable glass-like material lining the jar that keeps the sauce just as fresh-tasting as always.
Will the pasta sauce be as fresh as sauce in a glass jar?
Yes, the shelf life of our pasta sauce is 2 years, same as it was in a glass jar.
Is the whole package recyclable?
Our pasta sauce jars are 100% recyclable PET. The jar is stamped with recycling code 1 which is widely accepted by most municipal recycling programs. The cap is also recyclable, but recycling facilities for the cap may not be available in your area.
Can I microwave the jar?
Yes, the jar is microwave safe, without the metal cap, of course. However, as with glass, microwaving the sauce in the jar can create a mess, and we recommend heating the sauce in a more open container, such as a bowl.
Why are there ridges in the jar?
The ridges help the jar maintain its shape.
Are plastic packages safe even if exposed to high heat?
Yes, PET packages like the jar used for Newman’s Own pasta sauces are safe at high heat, including this one.
My jar has a dent in it – is it safe to eat?
As long as the top is unpopped, the sauce in a dented jar is perfectly safe to eat.
The top has already popped – is the sauce safe to eat?
If the top is popped, it means air has gotten inside the jar and we therefore do not recommend eating the sauce. Instead, you should return the jar to the store you purchased it from.
The jar is leaning to one side – is the sauce safe to eat?
As long as the top is unpopped, the sauce in a leaning jar is perfectly safe to eat.

The safety of our consumers and their pets is of utmost importance to all of us at Newman’s Own, and we are taking this matter very seriously. The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is investigating a potential dietary link between DCM and dogs eating certain grain-free pet foods and is soliciting data from pet owners and vets to help inform its investigation. Further information on this FDA investigation can be found here and here.
Should I stop feeding my dog grain-free dog food?
At this time, the FDA is not advising dietary changes based on the information they have gathered thus far. We recommend that concerned pet owners consult with a licensed veterinarian who can address their dog’s specific dietary needs.
A lot of thought and care goes into the products we make. We consult with a veterinarian for the creation of all our pet food recipes and we follow all FDA regulations when it comes to pet food.
Are your pet products thoroughly tested?
Yes. All of our pet products are manufactured to the highest standards of quality control and samples are obtained during each production run for analysis and retention for additional evaluation.

I would like to begin feeding Newman’s Own pet food to my dog and cat. I have read that if this is done too fast that intestinal upsets may result. What are your recommendations?
Whenever there is a change of diet, it's advisable to slowly introduce the new food by mixing it into the food currently fed. We recommend mixing Newman’s Own pet foods with your current pet food over a period of approximately 2-3 weeks to guarantee that your dog or cat’s digestive system adjusts to the new food. It is important to remember that Newman’s Own pet food ingredients such as fresh natural chicken and organic brown rice, being whole foods, may be richer and may be more nutritionally concentrated than your current food. We always recommend that you contact your veterinarian if your animal has persistent digestive upsets.
What are the benefits of feeding organic dog and cat foods?
Feeding organic foods eliminates the buildup of residues of chemical additives, preservatives, pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides which have been clinically proven to have adverse health effects on dogs, cats and in fact all animals including humans.

We use organic soybean meal in all our dry food formulas. Our team of veterinarians, including a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, felt that organic soybean meal provided an excellent hypoallergenic and concentrated source of many of the essential micro and macro nutrients that animals can benefit from.

Carrageenan is a seaweed extract common in the Atlantic Ocean near Britain, Continental Europe and North America and used as a thickening agent in place of animal-based products like gelatin, which is extracted from animal bones. Seaweed is boiled to extract the carrageenan, and in that sense, carrageenan is completely "natural" and not much different from tomato in its creation. Note: Chemically treated, degraded carrageenan however, is a known cancer causing agent and is not used or permitted in food production.

Why does the Advanced Formula, which is recommended for older dogs, have higher protein levels than the Adult Formula?
The advanced is higher in protein than the adult (24 vs. 21%) and is formulated for puppies, active dogs and seniors on the premise that the first two groups require higher levels of protein due to increased growth and energy needs and the later because of the decreased intestinal absorption associated with aging.
